Simulation-based eLearning
This project is an elearning module designed and developed for adult education tutors to experience and practice the process of developing integrated assessments for their learners. The module takes a simulation approach giving learners the opportunity to complete their own integrated assessment.
Audience: Adult Education Tutors
Tools Used: Articulate Storyline, Audacity, Canva, Krita, MindMeister, Google Docs
Client: City of Dublin Education and Training Board, Adult Education Services
Challenge
The approach to learner assessment within the Adult Education Services means that learners are assessed for a single module at a time, often undertaking a high number of assessment activities to achieve the specific learning outcomes of each module. Likewise, the single module assessment approach increases the assessment burden for tutors and limits the potential to develop coherent learning experiences for the learners. Integrating assessments across modules reduces both the number of assessments for learners and makes the learning experience more relevant and meaningful.
Solution
Through root cause analysis I identified that tutors did not have knowledge or experience of the process for integrating assessments. To address this I developed an interactive elearning module using Articulate Storyline. Through the use of an on-screen mentor, learners are guided through the steps and approaches for developing an integrated assessment. The training includes interactive demonstrations, quizzes and scenarios which provide immediate feedback and gradually support the learner to develop their own integrated assessment brief by the end of the module.

Results
By the end of the module tutors have developed an integrated assessment brief. This provides them with the basis for developing further briefs, allowing them to reduce the number of assessments their learners will need to undertake.
